"We are our stories" Dr. Musamali likes to say. He teases me for going from the past, to the future, and back to present day. The narratives you tell are narratives because what has happened isn't happening, and what hasn't happened yet, has yet to happen. The present moment is the only reality we are experiencing. Its an important distinction, often overlooked or intentionally avoided. So our present moments fall victim to our past and future, falling prey to hope and fear, preventing us from the clarity of now. If good art tells a story, thereby a good artist is a storyteller, What does art of the present look like? The painter paints. The writer writes. The dancer dances. The story must be told, The show must go on. But does that make the artist the art?

Process Notes

I was in love with an idea at the time of marrying my practiced form of sort of carving constructs from seeming random shapes of paint, with very familiar subjects that were highly recognizable. The poetry of the subject's transparency is merely a nod to my long-time sentiment of people often seeing my art and not the person. Or perhaps, that is my own absence of acknowledgment.
